Engineering oversees improvements to City streets and public infrastructure. Engineering staff prepares design documents for contractor bidding and manages the construction of those improvements.

Examples of typical projects include pavement overlays, new turn lanes and traffic signals, sewer and water pipeline repair or rehabilitation, shoulder widening, traffic signing and striping, maintenance and upgrade projects at the City's Water Treatment Plant and Water Quality Control Plant, and storm damage repair.

Engineering provides a wide range of technical services that directly support the community. In-house engineering staff performs most design work, and performs plan checking on new development and building modifications. City project engineers also work with consultants contracted by the City to accomplish some of the larger or more specialized projects. The design of each project follows Federal, State, County, and City adopted standards. Construction of the projects are performed by private contractors that are selected using a competitive bidding process.
